The Baltimore Sun is looking for a sharp, fast-moving night editor to drive news coverage later in the day. This position is the newsroom’s point of authority at night, responsible for making key editorial decisions, managing staff, coordinating with digital and print production teams, and ensuring our journalism is accurate, timely, and trusted.
This role requires hyper-alertness to news, urgency and keen judgment. This editor would be responsible for not only guiding stories from idea conception to final edit, but also writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO and keeping digital channels updated.
Essential Functions
- Monitors breaking news and assigns, edits and produces daily stories in varied formats.
- Leads real-time coverage of breaking news, including developing storylines, coordinating reporters and photographers.
- Oversees homepage curation, mobile alerts, newsletters, and social media posts to ensure the organization’s journalism reaches audiences at the right time and in the right format.
- Guides reporters on story development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.
- Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategies.
- Plans site and audience strategies for upcoming news events.
- Works evening news shifts, from 2-11 p.m.
- Coordinates with morning and day editors to ensure a smooth handoff and continuity of coverage.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional reporting experience (daily journalism experience strongly preferred).
- At least two years of experience as an editor/producer, leading a team.
- Excellent editing skills, with mastery of AP style, grammar, and headline writing.
- Demonstrated expertise in digital publishing, including SEO, social media, and audience analytics.
- Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
Salary Range: $75,000 to $100,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
