Overview

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional Visual Art teacher who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. This is a long-term substitute position for the 2025-2026 school year, starting 09/15/2025 and ending 01/02/2026. Substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments, and begin at the per diem rate of pay. Responsibilities

  • Teach Visual Art
  • Apply the Rubric of Effective Teaching to guide practice and outcomes
  • Set ambitious learning goals for all students and design cognitively demanding tasks
  • Assess students regularly, adjust instruction to meet goals, and persist through challenges
  • Demonstrate mastery and enthusiasm for the content and pedagogy
  • Convey content in creative and engaging ways aligned with standards
  • Provide equitable instruction and scaffold/differentiate to support all learners
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive classroom environment where every student participates
  • Engage families and build collaborative relationships to support student learning
  • Reflect on practice, seek feedback, and participate in collaborative professional learning

Qualifications - Required

  • Education: Hold a Bachelor’s degree
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and considered Highly Qualified
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching as outlined by Boston Public Schools
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience teaching in urban schools
  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching License for Visual Art at the appropriate level
  • Likelihood to contribute linguistic diversity and a willingness to engage with BPS’s official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali)
  • Certification in core content with potential endorsement in Moderate Disabilities or English as a Second Language at the appropriate grade levels

Terms

The start and end times of BPS schools vary, and some schools have a longer day under the Schedule A Expanded Learning Time agreement.
