Role description: The Social Media & Media Relations Manager/Content Creator is responsible for shaping and advancing BRCC’s social media presence and news media coverage. This role develops innovative strategies to increase social media followers, grow engagement, strengthen community trust, and position BRCC as a leader in higher education through storytelling, media partnerships, and proactive communications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Social Media Strategy & Growth – develop and implement strategies to increase followers across channels, create a content calendar aligned with institutional priorities, and stay current on industry trends and platform-specific approaches.
  • Content Development & Storytelling – create engaging written, visual, and multimedia content tailored to platform audiences; highlight BRCC’s students, faculty, staff, and community impact; collaborate with student workers/interns to expand reach.
  • Analytics & Performance Measurement – provide regular analytics reports to measure campaign success; use data insights to refine strategies and maximize engagement; ensure content alignment with audience preferences and institutional goals.
  • Media Relations & Publicity – write and distribute press releases and media advisories; build and maintain relationships with local and regional media; develop media pitches to secure BRCC coverage in broadcast, print, and online outlets; place BRCC officials in interviews and media opportunities.
  • Event Promotion & Crisis Communications – organize press conferences and media events; use social media for targeted advertising and emergency communications; monitor channels and respond promptly to questions or concerns.
  • Brand Engagement & Policy Oversight – ensure channels are interactive, engaging, and consistent with BRCC’s brand; enforce social media policy and maintain credentials; uphold best practices in compliance, accessibility, and institutional representation.
  • Innovation & Newsjacking – identify opportunities for timely coverage through newsjacking and trend-based campaigns; position BRCC as a thought leader through innovative storytelling.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Required Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in social media and media relations for a large, complex organization. Training and education may be substituted for the required education or experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in social media strategy, content development, and analytics; media relations including writing, securing coverage, and organizing press events; ability to manage multiple platforms, campaigns, and deadlines; exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Preferred Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in social media and media relations for a large, complex organization; experience in higher education or nonprofit sector communications; proficiency with analytics tools, CMS, and paid advertising; established media contacts in Baton Rouge and Louisiana region.
