Overview

The Office of Curriculum & Instructional Design (OCID) provides leadership and support in the development, implementation, and transformation of school library programs to meet the needs of the 21st Century learner and the changing face of education. The 2025 Hawaii State Legislature passed bill 961 that establishes a two-year pilot program for a 12-month certified librarian to provide rotating library support services to a school complex.

Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with school administrators and teachers to evaluate currently available learning resources and school needs in the areas of information literacy and technology

  2. Develop an action plan to improve student and teacher access to and familiarity with high-quality print and/or digital tools and content

  3. Provide students with high-quality learning experiences and support through in-person and/or virtual classrooms visits, individual consultation, and outreach

  4. Evaluate existing collection and ensure equitable access to a curated collection of diverse materials reflecting a variety of experiences and perspectives

  5. Provide professional learning opportunities that promote and support information literacy and digital literacy

  6. Promote student internalization of learning goals and a culture of literacy, lifelong learning, and digital citizenship

  7. Promote a culture of intellectual curiosity and growth at the selected schools and in their surrounding communities

  8. Collaborate with other school staff to improve and enhance library media services

  9. Participate in program evaluation annual reporting

This position will be supporting the following Farrington Complex Schools: Fern Elementary, Kaewai Elementary, Kalihi Uka Elementary, Kalihi Waena Elementary and Kapalama Elementary.

Qualifications

Certified Librarian with a degree in Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS). Possess a Hawaii teaching license.

Experience

Minimum 3 years of teaching and/or school Librarian experience.

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.
