Urbana Free Library is hiring: Library Assistant 1—Collections in Urbana

Overview

City of Urbana & The Urbana Free Library – Library Assistant 1 (Collections) position. This role involves automated circulation of library materials and maintenance of related files, shelving, processing returns, and supporting the Library’s collections.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed clerical work related to automated circulation and collection maintenance.
• Shelve books and materials, check in items, retrieve materials to fill requests, and maintain proper order of collections.
• Empty book returns, move materials and furniture, and run errands as needed.
• Report to the Collections Manager and support daily operations of the library’s collections.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Passing score on shelving test.

Desired Qualifications

• Prior successful work experience.
• Basic word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Prior experience with Polaris ILS.
• Bilingual skills (especially Spanish, French, or Chinese).

Schedule

• A successful applicant must be able to work the following weekly hours through December 2025, after which schedule updates will be available:
• Tuesday: 12pm-4pm
• Thursday: 12pm-4pm
• Saturday: 1pm-5pm

Selection Process

• Scoring of applicants: applications meeting minimum requirements will be scored; priority given to those submitted by the fullest consideration date.
• Panel interviews: at least two interviewers; interviews planned for October 2025.
• References: we will contact former employers of finalists.
• Selection: final hiring decisions consider all components; available candidates may be selected.
