Overview
GENERAL DUTIES: Under supervision of library director, coordinate circulation operations; assist with orientation, training, and leadership to Black River Falls Public Library staff. Assist with planning and implementing programs that benefit adults, promoting the library to the community, and participate in the day-to-day operations of the library. Hours: Full-time Position. Includes daytime, evening and weekend hours. Reports to: Library Director
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service to all community members in person, over the telephone or through electronic communication; respond to and resolve patron issues, concerns, and complaints; provide reader’s advisory, reference and referral, and technology assistance.
- Coordinate the planning, marketing, and implementation of a regular schedule of adult programs and events including lifelong learning (as series or sequenced programs) and special or one-time events.
- Assist in coordinating the library’s participation in community-based reading program.
- Oversee circulation functions (e.g. materials check out/in, magazine processing, WRLS delivery, printing, Inter-library loan).
- Promote an appropriate work environment and maintain confidentiality in regard to patron records.
- Assist in hiring, orientation, training and scheduling of library staff and library volunteers.
- Apply procedures, policies, and regulations for library staff and patrons.
- Prepare, maintain and provide statistics and reports.
- Work with a variety of systems and equipment (e.g. integrated library system, public-access computers, print management system, scheduling software, room reservations calendar, website management software, electronic resources, etc.).
- Participates in library policy development and implementation.
- Assist in maintaining strong community partnerships through effective and positive communications.
- Attend meetings and participate in staff development opportunities.
- Demonstrate expertise in Library Assistant Duties and Responsibilities.
- Assist the Library Director with special projects. Provide clerical support and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge
- Technology and a desire to learn about current library practices, and trends.
- Public library operations, services and activities.
- Excellent customer service principles and practices.
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Black River Falls Public Library’s mission, methods, policies and procedures.
Ability
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally, communicating in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Schedule and assist in supervision of personnel.
- Collect, compile and input data needed for timely and accurate reporting.
- Demonstrate computer skills – ability to perform basic troubleshooting, use computer software, perform data entry, basic computer operations and basic patron computer instruction including database instruction.
- Adapt to a variety of situations; be flexible to shift between job tasks & customer service.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
Working Conditions
Physical Demands of the Position:
- keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, shelving and processing.
- picking up and shelving books.
- Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less.
- Pushing and pulling book carts
- Bending/twisting, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and crouching.
- Reaching down to the ground and up higher shelving heights with the aid of a footstool.
- Occasional travel to meetings outside the library.
Education and Experience
- Two years post high school education preferred.
- Two years as a Library Services Assistant or related paraprofessional library position OR two years in a supervisory capacity in a customer-service environment is preferred.
- Keyboarding and general office experience.
- Knowledge of library systems and technologies beneficial.
