YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE

We are looking for a Media Technician in Columbus, OH. Your mission will be to prepare samples for processing and maintain documentation of processes to facilitate analysis procedures.

Purpose (Objective)

The incumbent prepares sample for processing and maintains documentation of process to facilitate analysis procedures.

Main Activities

  • Operate autoclaves and maneuver carts for sterilization of laboratory processing supplies, enrichment media, and decontaminated waste.
  • Operate automated dispensing machine to supply appropriate media volumes for target analyses.
  • Perform routine temperature monitoring and water analysis.
  • Perform verifications and set-up balances using reference materials.
  • Weigh dehydrated powders and reconstitute in large batches.
  • Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed.
  • Pour agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process.
  • Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified amount of time and temperature.
  • Perform volume and other quality checks on prepared media.
  • Aliquot volumes to tubes or pipets to challenge media with appropriate organisms.
  • Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
  • Separation of liquid and solid decontaminated waste for disposal.
  • Washing and organization of laboratory glass and plasticware.
  • Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) required to complete job tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
  • Read plates and tubes to determine the reaction of organisms in the sample.
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
  • Perform necessary housekeeping duties in a timely manner, keeping work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
  • Participate in cleaning schedule and maintain retain samples as required.
  • Adhere to all safety policies.
  • Support laboratory management in the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the management system.
  • Perform other related tasks as needed.

YOUR PROFILE

This role does involve dealing with biohazard waste; this is a biosafety lab with food sample waste.

Profile (required education/qualification and professional background): High School Diploma and 1+ years of relevant work experience. Basic knowledge of science to perform testing procedures and obtain accurate results. Basic knowledge of personal computers to enter testing data and results. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time.

Required skills: Time management, ability to prioritize samples and tasks in a fast-paced environment. Attention to detail. Analytical skills to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of microorganisms. General knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System to process client data. Physical dexterity for manipulating samples.

Work Environment: Laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to fumes, chemicals, and materials. Safety equipment such as gloves, lab coat and safety glasses may be required. Daily use of autoclave. Continuous lifting of materials up to 50 pounds. Extended standing. Ability to detect slight variations in color shades.
