Harris County Universal Services is transforming the way the County does business and seeks a Radio Field Technician - Advanced to join our team. Universal Services is the enterprise IT solutions center for the departments and offices of Harris County, providing Information Technology, Public Safety and Justice Technologies, 311 Constituent Engagement Services, Fleet Services, and Records and Information Governance Services. Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Field Operations Manager, this position will focus on the installation and maintenance of trunked P25 public safety radio communication equipment infrastructure and associated cable, wiring, and antenna systems located at radio communications towers and dispatch centers. The position involves system-level troubleshooting and user configuration. You will use a personal computer for your daily tasks. You will work inside buildings and outside in the field in all kinds of weather including Hurricanes and Tropical Storms. You will interface with first responders and communicators at various times. On-call rotation will be required to ensure the reliability of the system. This is a dynamic and technical position, and you will be challenged at times to ensure the radio system stays on the air for our first responders.

Job Responsibilities

  • Customer-service oriented, working directly with public safety professionals to diagnose and solve communications equipment problems in real time.
  • Use standard hand and specialized tools as well as specialized test equipment to install and maintain the public safety radio system.
  • Frequently handle confidential radio system information.
  • Essential physical demands: climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education: High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

Experience: Minimum of 4 years’ experience in electronics communications equipment and infrastructure service and repair; technical and operating knowledge of radio transmitting and receiving equipment and associated computer programming equipment for conventional and trunked radio system/mobile equipment; technical and operating knowledge of personal computers and associated radio system software.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of communication system design and construction; dispatch console configuration and troubleshooting and repair; microwave and Ethernet backhaul diagnostics, maintenance and repair; LAN/WAN IP networking troubleshooting and repair; AC/DC power and battery systems, troubleshooting and maintenance; UPS systems maintenance and troubleshooting; use of test equipment (multimeters, spectrum analyzers, watt meters, antenna test equipment); ability to work with hand and power tools; understanding of radio tower lighting standards and systems; good communication and documentation skills; commitment to maintaining base stations and consoles to high standards for safety and reliability; pass a criminal background check and drug test; works well with minimal supervision.

Additional Information: Applicants will be subject to a criminal background check that includes fingerprinting. Preferences (education and experience related): Bachelor or Associate degree in modern electronics; military communications training; Motorola P25 training; completion of an advanced electronics or military electronics program or certificate; four years of working knowledge of radio communications and electronics; public safety communications experience preferred; supervisory/SCADA experience; wireline dispatch console programming and repair; knowledge of generators and transfer switches; knowledge of NAS/ Motorola systems.

Licensure: Class B non-CDL driver’s license.

General Information: Hours — 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday. On-call and overtime may be required. Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards. Positions may close early due to high volume of applications.
