Job Title: Design Studio Architect
Department: Building Science
The Design Studio Architect candidate is a licensed Architect with strong technical skills and experience who is interested in specializing in building envelope and enclosure design and building science consulting. Areas of design specialization include restoration and repair of existing buildings, consulting on new construction, high-performance building enclosures, enclosure commissioning, and other enclosure-related and building-science topics.

What You’ll Do
The duties listed below are illustrative and not prescriptive.
- Meet with internal Consultants at the start of each design project to set scope, schedule, and budget, and guide design decisions.
- Independently schedule, coordinate, manage, complete, and deliver assigned design projects.
- For Design-Studio-led projects, independently manage and deliver entire projects from initiation to completion, including collaboration with other internal team members.
- Plan, develop, and deliver biddable, constructible, Building-Code-compliant drawings and specifications with appropriate detail, within schedule and budget. Develop drawings using AutoCAD, and specifications using Word and proprietary spec editing software.
- Conduct Building Code research for project jurisdictions using web-based libraries.
- Complete product research and selection; communicate with product representatives and manufacturers to obtain technical details and answers to design questions.
- Interact directly with Clients, including presenting design work, soliciting decisions, guiding discussions, resolving challenges, and coordinating schedules and scopes.
- Provide quality control reviews of design work at milestone deliverables.
- Apply advanced architectural concepts in design development.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced Design Studio staff and internal Consultants.
- Pursue additional technical certifications and training relevant to enclosure design and building science, applying this knowledge.
- Assist with post-project performance analysis and workflow/process improvements.
- Assist with development and refinement of the firm’s technical detail and specifications libraries.
- Assist with proposals and project fees.
- Assist with management and coordination of Design Studio day-to-day services and deliver high-quality, timely deliverables.
- Assist with budget goals, design scopes, scheduling, drawing reviews, and other architectural service tasks.
- Assist with revenue-driving goals such as project priming opportunities, design reviews, feasibility studies, code consulting, building science consulting, and property condition assessments as the Design Studio grows.
- Approximately 80% of time spent on billable tasks; 20% on representing the company in ongoing projects and business development.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering.
- 5 to 8 years of professional experience in architectural design, technical detailing, and design project management; experience with construction documents and the design process from Schematic Design through Construction Administration. Experience in construction or building enclosure investigations is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report
- Licensed Architect strongly preferred. Candidates on the path to licensure and enrolled in NCARB’s AXP program will be considered.
- Additional industry-specific certifications (RRO, AABA, AAMA, IIBEC, AWS, ACI, ICRI, SWRI, AIA, etc.) are a plus.
- Intermediate or better skills with accounting software; Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook), and web-based applications.
- Self-starter with ability to build relationships; professional writing skills for proposals, reports, emails, etc.
- Ability to coordinate actions of self and others; capability to lead teams across levels of the organization.
- Ability to take responsibility for work outcomes; able to work independently in a fast-paced environment; detail-oriented and organized; able to manage multiple projects.
- Fluency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge/experience in field inspection is a plus.
- LEED, Passive House, Green Globes, WELL, or other sustainable design accreditations related to building enclosure are a plus.
- Comfort visiting active construction sites, including limited ladder/scaffolding climbing.

This role involves work in offices, construction sites, and other settings; accommodations are available upon request through Human Resources. Physical and mental demands include regular sitting, movement on construction sites, climbing stairs/ ladders, and reading/typing; travel may be required.
