Job Summary
The RDC (Resource Development Content) team supports CARE's fundraising efforts by gathering, writing and editing content (primarily proposals and concept notes, in addition to occasional reports, stories, talking points, etc.) that result in optimal engagement and financial support for CARE's work. This position focuses on fundraising and stewardship products for Major and Principal Gifts donors, including donor-advised funds, family foundations, and high-net-worth individuals. The writer will also support communications related to fundraising priorities, such as flexible funding proposals, reports and humanitarian appeals, and will turn diverse program information into donor-ready products. A successful candidate will have strong writing skills, the ability to work under pressure, and broad knowledge of international development issues.
Responsibilities
- Develop proposals and stewardship reports for Major/Principal Giving Donors
- Prepare donor proposals for CARE projects and programs, coordinating with CARE country offices and technical teams to identify funding priorities; edit and finalize narrative proposals; collaborate with the grants coordination team on budget narratives
- Edit and assemble materials from drafts (often 2–10 pages) and occasionally create products from scratch; select photos, stories, testimonials, due diligence content, maps, infographics to strengthen submissions; edit stewardship reports for high-value grants
- Gather and translate program information into donor-ready fundraising, engagement, and information products; understand relief and development concepts and strategies
- Support development communications for Major Gift and Principal Gift fundraising priorities (flexible funding proposals, reports, donor updates, talking points, etc.)
- Present sophisticated programmatic concepts in varying forms for different audiences
- Oversee and participate in special projects related to CARE's fundraising and communications; may prepare emergency communications and coordinate with leadership as needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (International affairs, English/journalism; public health/development or technical area preferred)
- 5+ years of writing experience or equivalent
- Superior writing and research skills; ability to translate complex text into concise, compelling prose
- Project management and negotiation skills
- Grants-writing proficiency with a history of successful grants for family foundations, donor-advised funds, and high-net-worth individuals
- Proficiency in online research
- Conceptual knowledge of relief and development programming
- Cross-cultural communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work with diverse teams and stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree (International affairs, English/journalism, public health/development or equivalent)
- Second language (French and/or Spanish); teaching/training skills; overseas work/life experience; experience with social media or web content development
