Job Purpose The Youth Collection Development Librarian serves as a subject expert for children and young adults and ensures that collections for youth ages 0-18 are current, diverse, inclusive and responsive to the communitys needs and interests. They are enthusiastic about youth literature and media, familiar with publishing trends and committed to equitable access to information and resources. They regularly collaborate with the Youth Programs and Outreach Librarian to offer Library instruction to visiting groups, and to create a welcoming physical space in the childrens Library. Working with the Head Circulation Librarian, they support new staff, substitutes, pages and volunteers on any work specific to youth areas. They work most of their hours at the Childrens Library circulation desk but are scheduled for specific times off the desk to focus on their other work. As part of their regular responsibilities, they open and close the Library, offer reference and readers advisory and are expected to have a thorough knowledge of all Library services. They must work well under pressure, performing multiple tasks efficiently. Qualifications MLS from an ALA accredited institution or four years of college and Vermont Library Certification preferred plus relevant library experience. The Youth Collection Development Librarian must have an excellent knowledge of current and emerging library best practices for youth of all ages, as well as a passion for youth literature. The Library is open to everyone; all Library staff must remain professional, fair and respectful in their interactions with a wide variety of people. Mission focus, a collaborative nature and strong technology skills are also crucial at KHL. All Library employees must follow Library policies, including strictly adhering to patron privacy and confidentiality. Duties and Responsibilities Acts as the subject expert for the children's and young adult collections.In collaboration with the Director of Library Services and Youth Programs and Outreach Librarian, creates a welcoming space in youth areas and coordinates seasonal decor and topical displays. Works on the youth circulation desk and can perform all circulation desk duties with ease. Provides emergency coverage during their normal hours.Offers Library instruction and acts as an ambassador to the Childrens Library for visiting groups. Regularly checks in with and keeps the Director of Library Services fully informed of issues affecting the Childrens Library. Seeks advance approval and support for upcoming initiatives, programs or collections.Schedules and recruits Childrens Library art exhibits. Maintains art exhibit contracts in accordance with established practice and the Records Retention Policy.In collaboration with the Youth Programs and Outreach Librarian, collects and reports monthly statistics on volunteer hours and programs to the DLS.Performs other duties, as requested by Library Administrators. Youth Collection Development ResponsibilitiesWorking with the Director of Library Services:Maintains an exemplary and innovative collection for youth and young adults.Selects and orders materials for the Childrens Library in multiple formats.Stays up to date on emerging trends in youth Library collections, participates in relevant continuing education.Uses system reports to pull materials with low circulation for de-accession.Creates bibliographies and suggested reading lists for Library marketing.Creates topical book displays, including new items displays.Follows the Librarys Materials Selection Policy especially regarding collection development and requests for reconsideration.
