Shift Requirements

In-person, Monday thru Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Position

As a Design Technician, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Use the rectangular survey system as it relates to Iowa. Read and understand standard road plans, recreating and calculating information related to archived projects to originate CAD files showing section lines, property lines, existing right of way lines, and lot lines for use by other offices during department projects.
  • Prepare acquisition plats, plats of survey, and legal descriptions for the acquisition and disposal of right-of-way for department projects.
  • Prepare United States Public Land Survey corner certificates, reference sheets, and right-of-way strip maps after project construction.
  • Maintain permanent right-of-way records by researching and scanning into electronic format documents of record such as contracts, warranty deeds, easements, and city or county road plans.
  • Participate in field work with the survey crew, performing duties in all types of weather. Lift up to 50 pounds and utilize a jackhammer when performing duties with the survey crew. Operate various survey instruments such as GPS, total stations, data collectors, and levels.
  • Communicate with the private sector and other government agencies to gather information for department projects and retrieve and disseminate state archived information to the private sector, county, and state offices.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent), and experience equal to six years of full-time work in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection.
  2. All of the following (a and b):
    • Four years of full-time work experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection; and
    • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  3. All of the following (a and b):
    • Four years of full-time work experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection; and
    • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of an accredited vocational program in engineering technology, design drafting, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, construction inspection, or cartography equals two years of full-time experience.
  4. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Design Technician Associate.
