The Salvation Army Northern Division is seeking enthusiastic and committed high school and college-aged volunteers to serve as music instructors and worship leaders within our Music & Creative Arts Ministries. Volunteers will play a vital role in teaching music and arts classes, leading worship, and mentoring young people in a safe, faith-centered, and supportive environment.

This role is an excellent opportunity for students interested in music education, ministry, leadership, or the performing arts to gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact in the community.

Description of Position:

High school and college volunteers will help lead classes in music and the creative arts, while also participating in worship leadership, offering students an opportunity to develop teaching, leadership, and ministry skills in a supportive, faith-based environment.

Specific Duties:

  • Teach and assist in one or more areas of music and creative arts instruction (Band, Choir, Guitar, Piano, Brass, Percussion, Drama, Handbells, Timbrels, Dance).
  • Help lead worship services on Sunday mornings.
  • Model Christian values and serve as a positive mentor to youth participants.
    • Support evening program structure, which typically includes:5:00–5:30 PM – Dinner
    • 5:30–5:45 PM – Chapel
    • 5:45–6:10 PM – Choir
    • 6:15–6:45 PM – Instrument Lessons (Guitar, Piano, Brass, Percussion)
    • 6:45–7:15 PM – Character Building
    • 7:15–7:30 PM – Gym / Pick-Up & Program Close
  • Collaborate with Salvation Army staff and fellow volunteers to ensure a welcoming, encouraging, and structured environment.
  • Encourage student participation, growth, and confidence through music and creative expression.

Qualifications Sought:

  • High school or college student with proficiency in at least one area of music or creative arts.
  • Passion for teaching, mentoring, and inspiring young people.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and families.
  • Respect for the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Prior teaching or leadership experience is helpful but not required. Training and support will be provided.

Screening and Training:

To ensure the safety of all participants and the effectiveness of our programs, The Salvation Army follows a structured volunteer screening process:

  1. Application: Interested candidates must apply through Better Impact, The Salvation Army’s volunteer management database.
  2. Interview: A brief interview with the Music & Creative Arts Ministries staff to assess fit, skills, and interests.
  3. Background Check: All volunteers over the age of 18 must complete a background check in compliance with Salvation Army guidelines
  4. References: Volunteers may be asked to provide references, particularly if they are under 18.
  5. Orientation & Training: Approved candidates will complete orientation covering The Salvation Army’s mission, child safety, and program expectations.

Schedule:

Weeknights (5:00–8:00 PM): Volunteers may commit to the specific class(es) they are teaching and are not required to stay the full evening. (Specific day of the week varies by Corps/location)

Sunday Worship (10:00 AM–12:00 PM): Assist in worship leadership through music, drama, or other creative arts.

Length of Commitment: Semester-based service commitment:

  • Fall Semester: September – early December (prior to Christmas break)
  • Spring Semester: January – early May
