Job Summary
Proficient in performing daily work activities with minimal supervision. Proficient level work activities to be performed include: computer aided drafting to prepare and maintain maps, sketches, schematics and other engineering related drawings. Perform higher level Designer skills with direct to moderate supervision. Higher level work activities to be performed include: preparation of study layouts, design development, cost estimating, peer review of all deliverables defined as proficient work activities, check drawings, peer review, as well as performing other design and engineering work as defined or directed.

AEP is seeking a talented and motivated Designer to become an integral part of our engineering team.
What You\'ll Do:
- Innovative Drafting: Utilize computer-aided design software, including Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and PLS-CADD to prepare and maintain high-quality maps, sketches, schematics, and engineering-related drawings.
- Advanced Design Skills: Demonstrate your design expertise with a focus on quality and compliance, while working under direct to moderate supervision.
- Collaborative Planning: Coordinate daily work routines to ensure efficient production and contribute to the overall success of projects.
- Detailed Documentation: Create, revise, and maintain comprehensive engineering records and material/property equipment documentation.
- Effective Communication: Gather essential information through various sources, including field notes, vendor catalogs, and site visits, to inform your work.
- Mathematical Precision: Perform necessary calculations to ensure accuracy in all assigned tasks.
- Quality Assurance: Review and check work performed by peers to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and compliance with company methods.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work alongside various departments to ensure safety and efficiency in all operations.
- Design Validation: Assess designs for strength and conformity to accepted standards and integrate vendor specifications into your work.
- Cost Management: Prepare estimates and requisitions as needed, ensuring budget adherence.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and training to junior employees, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
- Safety First: Actively promote and participate in our Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.
- Integrity and Compliance: Uphold our corporate policies and demonstrate ethical behavior in all aspects of your work.
What We're Looking For:
Associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology, with one (1) to two (2) years of relevant equivalent experience.
Work Experience (without AAS degree) requirement listed below:
Equivalent experience without AAS degree - high school graduate and six (6) years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.
Other Must Haves:
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Proficiency in Vault
- Familiarity with PLS-CADD
- Must be available to work overtime, call-out overtime and shift work, as required.
- Travel requirements are expected > 50 % of the time.
- Must be familiar with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver\'s license.
- Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law.
- This position may require shift work or overtime.
- Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.
