Title: Assistant Professor (Japanese Pre-Modern Literature) Hiring Unit: East Asian Languages and Literatures/College of Arts, Languages & Letters Location: Manoa Date Posted: September 24, 2025 Closing Date: Continuous - application review begins November 17, 2025 Salary Information: Commensurate with experience and qualifications Monthly Type: 9 Month Tenure Track: Tenure Full Time/Part Time: Full-time Temporary/Permanent: Permanent Other Conditions: The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University of Hawai\'i at Manoa invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position in pre-modern Japanese literature at the level of Assistant Professor to start Fall 2026, pending position clearance and availability of funds. The Department of EALL is among the largest departments of its kind in the country and offers a curriculum unparalleled in its breadth and scope in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language, linguistics, literature, and culture. We offer B.A. degrees in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; MA & PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures, with concentrations on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Linguistics and Literature. Our campus welcomes all students but given our responsibilities to the community in which we operate, as part of our strategic mission, we strive to become a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, a place that is committed to integrating Native Hawaiian language, culture and/or values into its academic and campus environment. Duties and Responsibilities
Teach graduate courses in area of pre-modern specialization; Teach undergraduate courses (introductory through advanced) in Japanese literature and culture, and Japanese language courses, including classical Japanese; Advise undergraduate and graduate students; Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization; Participate in graduate committees; Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels; Other duties as assigned by the Chair. Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in premodern Japanese literature, or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (ABD will be considered; all requirements for degree must be completed by August 2026); Demonstrated expertise in pre-modern Japanese literature; Demonstrated experience in teaching, advising and service; Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization; High level of proficiency in Japanese and English; Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff and administrators. Desirable Qualifications
Ability to develop courses in newer interdisciplinary fields Teaching and advising experience at a college level; Evidence of successful mentoring of graduate/doctoral students To Apply
