POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position oversees JPR's weekend operations and serves as a local host of NPR's Weekend Edition, inserting local breaks into designated portions of the program. The employee should be comfortable in a live radio environment, have a clear and engaging speaking voice, and be an effective problem solver using a wide array of computer systems and technology.

Minimum Requirements

  • Clear and engaging speaking voice with the ability to read aloud from printed copy smoothly and with pacing awareness
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to use word processing and web browsing software and navigate the SOU campus computer networking environment

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous radio and/or audio production experience
  • Proficiency with audio editing and playback software, such as Adobe Audition
  • Experience operating radio control board and other audio equipment (CD players, computer hard drive playback)

Essential Functions

The following examples illustrate the general range of work functions and are not all-inclusive:

  • Host Weekend Edition – promote upcoming segments and insert local weather forecasts into the program.
  • Record and produce promotional and programming announcements for later broadcast, including tagging NPR promotions and pre-recording weather announcements.
  • Monitor station parameters and problem-solve minor technical issues; notify JPR staff for larger issues.

  • Excellent communication skills; able to convey information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Customer service experience with diplomacy and professionalism in sensitive situations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply a wide variety of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent policy changes and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive with the ability to assess operations and prevent/resolve problems.
  • Initiative in planning and organizing work within defined parameters.
  • High productivity with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to coordinate multiple assignments with deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills across word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media, online calendars, and email.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse population and build working relationships.
  • Willingness to operate in a bureaucratic environment with multiple internal and external contacts.
  • Willingness to learn university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.

Physical Demand

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods.

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours for special jobs; may be on-call for emergencies.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • This position is non-exempt and subject to FLSA overtime provisions.
  • The position is a mandatory reporter under Oregon law and must comply with Oregon DHS requirements.
