Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking a Library Assistant for the Circulation Section at the Daytona Beach Library. This position spends at least 50% of time in direct service to library users at the public service desk, at the self-checkout station, or as a rover/ambassador. Responsibilities include checking in materials, processing incoming new materials, managing patron reservations, and assisting with collection management in the stacks. May assist with displays and programs as needed.
Responsibilities
- Performs paraprofessional library work for public desk service or for cataloging, classifying, and indexing library materials.
- Assists with patron accounts, directs patrons to materials, answers basic library questions or refers appropriately.
- Uses the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, and electronic catalog; may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, and hardware.
- Assists with training staff and/or volunteers in specialized areas under the direction of a librarian.
- Assists librarians in operation of Children’s, Circulation, Computer/AV, Reference, or Technical Services sections.
- Provides front-line service to citizens and visitors by phone, in person, or electronically.
- Registers new patrons, handles charging/discharging of library items, resolves patron accounting matters, retrieves materials, inventories, and collects fines/fees.
- Performs branch or system-wide processing or data entry for various sections.
- Performs other library-related functions such as opening/closing a section, shelving, shelf reading, and locating reserved or overdue materials.
- Assists with preparation and implementation of adult, teen, or children’s programs under supervision.
- Assists with daily and/or weekly money deposits and attends required workshops/ meetings.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and two (2) years of customer service experience, or experience as a Library Assistant or equivalent position. A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire, and obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire and maintain thereafter.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends.
- Pre-employment skills test may be required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of library techniques including shelving, sorting, alphabetization, and the Dewey Decimal system.
- Knowledge of computer applications as applied to library services.
- Knowledge of money counting procedures; ability to count and make change and read check details.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and to communicate concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of library procedures and practices; knowledge of reader interests and authors.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, volunteers, public, and diverse communities.
- Ability to maintain accurate records relating to collections and accounting for library materials.
- Ability to teach library techniques and procedures; adaptability to travel to different locations as needed.
