Overview

Nature Biomedical Engineering is seeking an editor with experience in Biomedical Engineering to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team. The successful candidate will primarily support Nature Biomedical Engineering and may collaborate with other Nature Portfolio journals as needed. Responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

Role Responsibilities

  • Handling original research papers and working with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts based on expert advice.
  • Contributing to content and strategy for Nature Biomedical Engineering and other Nature Portfolio journals as needed.
  • Commissioning and editing content such as reviews, or writing editorials.
  • Liaising with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio and with experts in the international scientific community.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a field related to biomedical engineering.
  • Additional research experience is valuable but not required.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a broad interest in scientific research, both within and beyond specialty areas.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to assess novelty, context, and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of the discipline.
  • Willingness to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn about their research, and help them understand what Nature Portfolio seeks in papers.
  • Editorial experience is not required, but candidates with editorial experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

Reporting and Location

The successful candidates will report to the Chief Editor of the journal. This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating role located in New York or Shanghai. The position is permanent and the starting date is as soon as possible.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $80,000; Senior Editor: $95,000. Salary offers vary by experience, education, skill level and geography. The US salary range does not necessarily align with ranges in other countries when converted.
