About the Role

Nature Research publishes high-quality research across the natural sciences. Nature Communications is a leading multidisciplinary Open Access journal. We are seeking a researcher with a geosciences background and interest in geochemistry, geodynamics, tectonics, or geophysics who can contribute to the editorial process and engage with the scientific community.

The Associate/Senior Editor role is suitable for researchers who enjoy learning about the natural world and are open to papers outside their chosen area of research.

Responsibilities

  • Handling original research papers and working with editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Making well-reasoned editorial decisions based on expert advice.
  • Determining the representation of their subject in the journal.
  • Collaborating with editors at other journals in the Nature family and with international researchers.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

Qualifications

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in geosciences; strong expertise in solid Earth sciences (e.g., tectonics, seismology, geophysics, geodynamics, volcanology, planetary science, petrology, or mineralogy).
  • Postdoctoral experience is preferred but not required; thorough understanding of the subject fundamentals.
  • Passion for science and willingness to learn across the wider field, including statistics and machine learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to assess novelty, context and implications of research across the discipline.
  • Eagerness to travel and engage with scientists worldwide.

Location and Employment Details

This role can be based in Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, New York, Washington, Jersey City, Madrid or Milan (hybrid). The position is full-time and permanent. Editorial experience is not required, but candidates with significant editorial experience may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

Salary and Benefits

Salary information for US-based candidates: Associate Editor: $80,000; Senior Editor: $95,000 per year.
