JOB TITLE: Scenic Artist
ALTERNATE TITLES: Painter, Scenic
REPORTS TO: Charge Artist, Production Manager
JOB TYPE: Seasonal, Salaried

GENERAL JOB STATEMENT: The scenic artist is responsible for working with the Scenic Designer/Coordinator and the Scenic Charge in the laying out, priming, painting, texturing, sculpting, detailing, etc. of all hard scenic items and backdrops.

Responsibilities

• Interpreting design renderings.
• Mix color based on designer renderings and color-matching based on existing pieces.
• Creation of pounces and stencils.
• Base, primary, and finish painting of all hard pieces of scenery.
• Sculpting and carving of organic foam shapes.
• Laying out and painting of backdrops either upright on a paint frame or painted flat on a stage.
• Assist the props or crafts department on specialty paint projects as requested.
• Touch-up and maintenance of all completed projects.
• Assist in organization and maintenance of workspaces and tools.
• Maintain a clean and safe workspace.
• Ability to work within a group.
• Any additional tasks as requested by the Scenic Charge or the PM.

Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum three years’ experience in theatrical scenic painting or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of painting techniques.
• Ability to be fitted with a respirator.
• Prior work on a paint frame is a positive, but not required.
