Lead Fiber Designer

We are looking for a Lead Fiber Designer in Overland Park, KS, to oversee fiber design projects, ensuring timely completion and high-quality outcomes. This role requires leadership in supervising designers, providing feedback, and implementing process improvements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize QGIS, ArcGIS, and other GIS tools to create FTTX designs.
  • Learn and implement new tools and methods to support cross-functional work across multiple markets.
  • Analyze network demand point data to create effective fiber designs.
  • Provide CAD support for fiber systems, including permit plan and profile drawings, construction drawings, and conduit designs.
  • Review permitting prints and provide feedback to minimize costly or challenging changes.
  • Communicate effectively within projects, adhering to jurisdictional requirements.
  • Maintain robust quality control/assurance processes, including validation checks and QA/QC of fiber designs.
  • Design Fiber to the Home (FTTH), backhaul/transport fiber routes, Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU), distribution/feeder designs using provided software and methods.
  • Perform fiber splicing during the design phase within GIS or software programs.
  • Understand easements, right-of-ways, aerial plant, and buried plant to support the design process.
  • Read and interpret maps, plats, as-builts, construction drawings, and utility records.
  • Perform quality assurance on other designers' work with minimal guidance.
  • Display an in-depth understanding of fiber architecture across multiple markets.
  • Take ownership of special projects with limited supervision.
  • Support the Lead Designer and/or Manager in training new hires or lower-level designers.
  • Ensure the timely completion and delivery of projects.
  • Supervise and provide performance feedback to designers.
  • Recommend process improvements and identify training opportunities.
  • Train and develop new hires or lower-level designers, including creating training materials.
  • Perform final quality assurance checks on work produced by lower-level and senior designers with limited to no guidance on fundamentals.
  • Independently design across multiple markets, understanding all required design parameters.
Qualifications:
  • 2-4 years of related GIS and telecom records experience.
  • 4 or more years of telecom experience with distributed split networks, greenfield, brownfield, and splicing/fiber counts.
  • 1 or more years of experience with centralized split networks.
  • 1 or more years in a leadership role.
