Statement of Duties
Position performs routine functions for the Library Department. Work includes retrieving and shelving library materials, filing and sorting magazines and newspapers, physical processing of library materials, providing locational information and assistance to patrons, assisting with children, teen and adult programs, assisting with displays and publicity and providing clerical support as needed. Position Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Provides general assistance to library staff performing a number of routine work responsibilities. Returns books and other library materials to their proper location. Retrieves, routes, or prepares library materials for discard as instructed. Assists patrons and staff with locating books, videos, and other materials on the shelf. Scans shelving order to ensure that materials of each collection type are in the correct numerical and alphabetical sequence; rearranges items as necessary. Processes books for circulation, applying book jackets, call number and security labels, property stamps and card pockets. Repairs books and other materials. Provides general assistance at library programs and events. May use computers to search library catalog or to type and print labels. May assist with routine circulation duties. May assist in preparing display or promotional materials. May assist with transporting books, moving tables, and rearranging rooms as needed. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Supervision
Employee works under the general supervision of the Staff Librarians. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. Employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further instructions. Reviews and checks of work are applied to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress. Job Environment
The work consists of simple, routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in established procedures. Well defined or detailed rules, instructions and procedures cover all aspects of work. Employee uses judgment to choose the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.
Errors could result in a delay or loss of service.
Employee has frequent contact with patrons and co-workers. The purpose of these contacts is to receive assignments, or to respond to inquiries or requests. Contacts are usually made in person. Physical and Mental Requirements
Employees work in a quiet library and are required to stand, talk or listen/hear, and use hands more than 2/3 of the time; walk, reach with arms and hands, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl up to 1/3 of the time. Employees frequently lift up to 5 pounds and seldom lift up to 25 pounds. Occupational risks include dealing with stress related to unruly customers. Normal vision is required for the position. Equipment operated includes light equipment, office machines, and computers. Education and Experience
A candidate for this position does not require a High School Diploma or any prior work experience but must be able to pass a written test. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A candidate for this position should have: Basic familiarity with libraries Ability to alphabetize and put into numerical and decimal order Ability to use a computer Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships
