Duties and Responsibilities
As a Librarian, you’ll be a key member of the public services team, contributing to programs, services, and community outreach across all age groups. You’ll collaborate with colleagues, engage with patrons, and help shape a positive library experience every day.
Your Responsibilities May Include
- Planning and delivering creative and engaging programs for children, teens, adults, and families—both inside the library and at community outreach events
- Providing excellent customer service with a friendly, professional, and helpful attitude
- Assisting patrons with locating materials, using computers, accessing digital resources, and navigating library services
- Offering readers’ advisory and research support tailored to a diverse range of patrons
- Promoting the library through partnerships with schools, community groups, and local organizations
- Supporting collection development through material selection, weeding, and displays
- Supervising volunteers and possibly paraprofessional staff
- Taking initiative to identify and meet community needs through tailored programs and services
- Staying informed about new and emerging technologies—and helping others learn to use them
- Serving as person-in-charge during assigned shifts and assisting with day-to-day branch operations
- Adapting to changes in schedule, location, and work priorities as needed
To succeed in this role, you’ll need strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with a team, and a commitment to providing inclusive service to a diverse community. You should be comfortable engaging with patrons of all ages, including children, teens, and those who speak languages other than English. Initiative, creativity, and flexibility are key—along with a willingness to grow and learn. Spanish language skills are a plus.
Education, Experience, Licensing
You must have a mix of education and work experience. This means:
One Of The Following
- A Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science (or a closely related field) from an accredited graduate program
- A Bachelor’s Degree and current enrollment in an accredited graduate library school program, with graduation expected within six (6) months of hire
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science
Preferred
- At least one year of experience working in a library or a closely related field
- A valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Supplemental Information
Work Schedule
- Full-time, 80 hours bi-weekly
- Schedule includes variable hours with evenings, Saturdays, and some Sundays
- Employees may be temporarily or permanently reassigned to another library location based on system needs

Lee County employees eligible to participate in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) are required to contribute 3% of each paycheck to FRS. If you have retired from the Florida Retirement Pension plan you will not be eligible for renewed membership in either of the FRS retirement plan options. Retirees of the Investment Plan are eligible for renewed membership in the Investment Plan only. FRS reemployment rules apply for both.
