The Bower School of Music & the Arts (BSM&A) at FGCU invites applications for a 9-month, multi-year appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Music Education, who will also serve as Area Head of Music Education and BME degree program coordinator. This position entails coordinating the Bachelor of Music Education degree program and assuming a senior leadership role in music education within the school. The successful candidate will also participate in the development of a proposal for a new Master of Music degree and may teach in a secondary area based on expertise and departmental needs. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in music education and present a record of scholarly and/or administrative achievement, with a demonstrated capacity to continue research and creative activity at FGCU.

Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and teach assigned courses, including developing syllabi, instructional materials, and assessments.
- Deliver interactive and engaging lectures aligned with curriculum goals and accreditation standards.
- Maintain high standards of classroom instruction and engage in reflective self-assessment for continuous improvement.
- Provide academic advising and student support; hold regular office hours.
- Utilize the University's learning management system and other instructional technologies.
- Collaborate with departmental faculty on curriculum development and program advancement.
- Ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
- Establish and maintain an active research program with opportunities for undergraduate involvement; demonstrate scholarship and grantsmanship.
- Participate in continued professional development and maintain skills appropriate to rank and field.
- Participate in faculty evaluation, student learning assessment, and required training activities.
- Communicate professionally and timely with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators; uphold integrity and excellence in all professional activities.
- Comply with University policies, procedures, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
- Develop and teach undergraduate courses in music education and collaborate on curriculum development at course and program levels.
- Mentor students in music education and vocational pathways as part of a socially and culturally engaged academic and regional community.
- Work collegially on program development and assessment with faculty and staff in the Music Program, BSM&A, and the College of Arts and Sciences; engage with the southwest Florida community and FGCU programs.
- Participate in department, college, and university activities, committees, meetings, auditions, and events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Music Education or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent; completed by start of appointment.
- Three or more years of successful K-12 teaching.
- Demonstrated experience in higher education teaching general music education courses.
- ABD will be considered if the degree is conferred by August 7, 2026; if selected, appointment at Lecturer level on a fixed contract.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three or more years of successful college/university teaching.
- Experience with state certification and accreditation requirements.
- Certification or proficiency in general music approaches (Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze, etc.).
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in student recruitment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of education methods, materials, and state certification requirements.
- Understanding of central concepts, debates, inquiry processes, and ways of knowing in the discipline(s).
- Ability to use digital and interactive technologies to achieve learning goals; experience with various teaching modalities (face-to-face, synchronous, asynchronous).
- Ability to foster critical thinking and student independence in musicianship, teaching, and educational leadership.
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders inside and outside the University to improve student learning.
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to research, teaching, and public engagement to contribute to the excellence of the Bower School of Music and the Arts.
