Overview
The Des Moines Register is seeking a service and trending journalism reporter to be part of its Connect Team, reporting and writing stories that connect our digital audiences with news and information that helps them navigate their everyday lives. This is a high-volume beat with a focus on social media platforms, audience metrics and SEO techniques, and includes training on SEO, audience analytics and headline writing.
Responsibilities
- Chase news, sports, politics, business and entertainment stories that meet reader needs and answer their questions.
- Publish three short posts most weekdays; pitch high-audience-potential ideas each morning; add smart context and multimedia; perform original reporting to add value to reader experience.
- Write inviting headlines and social language to maximize audience engagement.
- Monitor and respond to analytics to inform reporting and publishing decisions.
- Collaborate with Connect Team to deliver timely, accurate local news coverage.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 years of experience in professional journalism writing, editing, digital production or social media roles.
- Strong planning, organizational and time management skills.
- Command of media law and ethical reporting standards.
- Ability to thrive under deadlines and publish multiple stories every workday.
- Excellent news judgment, ethical standards, and audience-focused writing.
- Headline-writing skills and familiarity with SEO and Google Trends; ability to act quickly on trending topics.
- Experience monitoring analytics and adapting coverage accordingly.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
