DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Strategic and Critical Communications Department enhances the public's understanding of the University of California and its contributions to the state, the nation, and the world. The department coordinates with the rest of the External Relations and Communications Division (ER&C) and other UC colleagues to design and implement strategies that effectively communicate the University's mission and impact to the news media. POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Media Relations Officer for the UC Office of the President, the university's systemwide headquarters, is responsible for pitching positive systemwide stories, fielding media inquiries, and developing communications materials for UC and for senior leaders, including press releases, statements, op-eds, FAQs, and talking points. The person in this role will work in collaboration with ER&C colleagues and campus media leaders to identify, write (or assist in writing) media pitches, organize collateral (including photos, graphic elements, video, and social media content), and proactively pitch to media stories that support university and presidential priorities, position UC as a leader on a particular topic, and further highlight UC's state, national and global impact. The Senior Media Relations Officer will also work with subject matter experts at UCOP and other UC locations to gather and provide timely, vetted information to reporters, collaborating with the team to manage important issues and proactively stem potential crises. In addition, this role will support the implementation of messaging strategies (including developing media rollout plans), while serving as an on-the-record spokesperson for the university.
We are seeking dynamic and highly motivated applicants with advanced strategic communications experience and impeccable writing skills who thrive on working on high-profile communications and issues.
