REISSUED ANNOUNCEMENT

Applications will be accepted year-round. Applications will be reviewed in groups, and passing candidates will be added to the continuous recruitment eligible list twice a year based on a process to commence after the last business day of July and the last business day of January.

NOTE: This process is explained in more detail in the Subjects of Examination portion of this examination announcement. The Commission reserves the right to alter any and all aspects of this examination program, including but not limited to, adding names to the list and re-filing and eligibility time frames. Names of successful candidates will be certified on the eligible list in score order, and will be removed from the list at the time of appointment or two years after being placed on the list.

Responsibilities

Performs entry-level professional librarian duties; performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate. If you have not previously submitted a copy of your professional library certificate to the Civil Service Commission, you must include a copy with your application.

Residency and Addresses

RESIDENCY: SEE ITEM NO. 5 OF GENERAL INFORMATION. CANDIDATES must have been legal residents of Nassau County and/or Suffolk County and/or Westchester County and/or the five boroughs of NYC for at least twelve months immediately preceding the written test and maintain residency until appointment from the eligible list.

Special Note: The Village of Freeport has a special residency requirement which must be satisfied.

Fees and Waivers

FEE: Non-refundable processing fee must be submitted for each separately numbered examination. Fee must be paid by credit or debit card. Review minimum qualifications to ensure eligibility as this is a non-refundable processing fee. Applications submitted without proper payment will be rejected.

APPLICATION FEE WAIVER: A waiver is available if unemployed and primarily responsible for supporting a household, or if eligible for Medicaid, SSI, Public Assistance, or Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligibility; active-duty military and veterans are exempt. All claims are subject to verification. If eligible, select the Fee Waiver option during application.

Examinations and Scoring

Subjects of Examination: This examination will consist of two parts:

  1. A rated evaluation of training and experience.
  2. A qualifying Spanish language oral proficiency test.

Both parts must be passed to be eligible for appointment. Only the rating on the training and experience portion is used for final scores.:

Training and Experience Evaluation

There will be no written test for this examination. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be rated based on an evaluation of your training and experience against the duties of the position.

Language Requirement

This exam includes a Spanish language oral proficiency test (pass/fail). A level 2 proficiency is required to pass the oral test. Candidates who pass the training and experience portion will be invited to take the oral test as vacancies arise.

Important Instructions

It is the candidate's responsibility to notify the Commission in writing of any change of name, address, or phone number. Include the examination number and title and your social security number.

General Information

1. Applying: Direct inquiries to the Executive Director, Nassau County Civil Service Commission. The Commission does not accept responsibility for email delivery delays. The Commission reserves the right to reject late applications.

2. Training and Experience: The burden of establishing qualifications rests with the applicant. Certificates, licenses, and military papers may be required with the application. Education verification rules apply as described.

3. The Examination: The Commission may subdivide the examination or require a specific passing mark. Disqualifications may occur for misconduct or violations of law. Examinations will be conducted according to the Civil Service Law and Commission rules.

4. Eligible Lists and Special Requirements: Vacancies may be limited; lists last four years unless expired earlier. Some positions may require fingerprinting and clearance. Residency preferences and special local requirements may apply.

Notes on Credits

Additional Credits: Veterans credits may be added to passing scores as defined in the NY Constitution. Rules for 85-A and 85-B children of firefighters/police officers are included and provide additional points under certain conditions. Documentation must be provided when claim is made.
