UI/UX Designer — Local to Austin TX

Location: Austin, TX | Type: Contract (11 Months) | Remote/Onsite as applicable

Lead user research initiatives and journey mapping to gain deep insights into user interactions and identify opportunities for optimization. Develop wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies in accordance with accessibility guidelines and branding standards. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to apply industry best practices in UI/UX design. Engage in discovery workshops, feedback sessions, and sprint planning to ensure design decisions are aligned with business objectives. Utilize a comprehensive toolset (Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Hotjar) to implement usability testing, responsive design, and accessibility considerations. Possess experience designing interfaces for AI/ML-enabled systems with attention to explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction principles. Able to design for complex business logic and regulatory requirements, particularly in domains like government services, healthcare, or finance. Demonstrated ability to present data visually and advocate for user-centered design. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a focus on accessibility (WCAG) and inclusive design. Experience with eligibility determination systems or similar rule-based, data-intensive applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead user research initiatives and journey mapping to gain deep insights into user interactions and identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Develop wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies in accordance with accessibility guidelines and branding standards.
  • Collaborate with Code for America and cross-functional teams to apply industry best practices in UI/UX design.
  • Engage in discovery workshops, feedback sessions, and sprint planning to ensure that design decisions are aligned with business objectives.
  • Employ tools—including Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and Hotjar—and implement usability testing, responsive design, and SEO optimization strategies.
  • Experience with AI/ML Interfaces: Designing user interfaces for systems that incorporate Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, with a focus on explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction principles.
  • Complex System Design: Understand and design for complex business logic and regulatory requirements.
  • Data Visualization: Present complex data and AI insights in clear, concise visual formats.
  • Empathy and User Advocacy: Advocate for user-centered design principles.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Accessibility Standards: Knowledge of WCAG and other accessibility guidelines.
  • Experience with eligibility determination systems or similar data-intensive applications.

Required Skills / Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience designing user interfaces and experiences for enterprise systems using Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch.
  • 4+ years of experience collaborating with technical and non-technical teams, translating business needs into intuitive design solutions that meet accessibility and branding standards.
  • 4+ years applying UX design principles to create responsive and accessible web and mobile interfaces.
  • 4+ years of experience creating wireframes and prototypes that support agile development cycles.

Preferred Skills

  • 5+ years designing graphical diagrams and visual narratives to communicate timelines, workflows, and system architecture.
  • 3+ years facilitating design workshops and feedback sessions with stakeholders.
  • 3+ years of Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, HCI, CS, or related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • 3+ years of strong multitasking skills across multiple design streams.
