Person County Government is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented Deputy Library Director to join the leadership team at the Person County Public Library. This key leadership role supports the Library Director in the overall administration, supervision, and advancement of library services, programs, and operations.

The Deputy Library Director plays a vital role in shaping the library’s mission to serve the community through inclusive, accessible, and forward-thinking services. The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.

This is an exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.

Library hours vary by day. See posting for current schedule details:

  • Monday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed

Essential functions

  • Assists the Library Director with planning and implementing the Library’s strategic plan, goals, mission, vision, and core values.
  • Assists the Library Director in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery; identifies opportunities for innovation and improvement; and facilitates positive change in the library.
  • Responsible for the development of Outreach initiatives for the Person County Public Library.
  • Manages and evaluates Outreach staff (one full-time and one part-time position).
  • Takes responsibility for the operation of the library in the absence of the Director; advises and participates in library operations, management, and planning.
  • Assists with ensuring consistent operation of library facilities, and coordinates building maintenance and repairs with county maintenance teams.
  • Assists with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff to coordinate services.
  • Assists with interviewing, training, and coordinating volunteers.
  • Communicates policy and procedure updates, and other vital information to Library Pages.
  • Maintains accurate files related to maintenance, service, and vendor contracts and reviews all files and contracts annually with Director.
  • Maintains an open, positive, and collaborative working relationship with Person County IT, technology vendors, and Cardinal consortium staff.
  • Assist patrons at the circulation desk in-person and via the telephone; verify eligibility, complete and update registration records, update registration information, check out and renew materials, collect fines and fees, explain and enforce policies and procedures, provide information about library services and operations, answer patron questions, problem solve issues and assist with maintaining library statistics data.
  • Assist with financial recordkeeping and cash handling duties.
  • Provide the Library Director and staff with insight and support regarding scheduling and coordination of library programs.
  • Select and maintain collections of resources to meet the needs of patrons.
  • Promote the library in the community through printed materials and social media interaction, and attend meetings and functions as required as a representative of the library.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities, with Library Director approval.
  • Abide by, enforce, and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of Person County and Person County Public Library policies and procedures.
  • Participate in other library activities and programs, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association in library or information science or related field.
  • Three to five years’ experience in library supervision or management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • North Carolina Public Librarian Certification eligibility and must obtain within one year of employment.
  • Passport Program certification must obtain within 3 months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
