Summary

Performs recurring clerical and technical library duties involving requesting, receiving, cataloging, referencing, processing, and circulation of library materials. Provides information and assistance to library customers.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary customer service resource in the circulation area, to staff, students, and the public.
  • Assists faculty, staff, students, and other visitors with use of the library; helps them find materials and use resource guides.
  • Conducts "walk-and-talk" orientations for students and staff in areas such as general library use, periodical research, bibliographic search, Internet search, and electronic media.
  • Demonstrates the use of card catalogs and performs cataloging. Provides basic reference services.
  • Shelves new and returned materials and ensures data entry into the library system.
  • Mends and repairs library materials and disposes of damaged or outdated items per procedures.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment; circulates, stores, inventories books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials (including overdue materials).
  • Maintains records for lost/overdue items and fines; issues holds based on student account balances.
  • Processes library materials within established parameters; handles interlibrary loan requests and maintains course reserve collections.
  • Maintains current procedures manuals and cross-trains other staff members.
  • Coordinates and supports library displays, bulletin boards, posters, and signs; maintains a clean environment.
  • Checks out/in, delivers, and picks up audio-visual equipment as needed for classrooms and administrative requests.
  • Assists with ordering, receiving, and inspecting library materials; documents receipts and records transactions.
  • Creates and updates computerized reserve listings for library patrons, instructors, and administrators.
  • Maintains the periodical section and recommends periodicals for purchase.
  • Provides guidance and training to student employees; performs other duties as assigned to support library operations.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic procedural knowledge of standard library methods, practices, and terminology, including use of library card catalogs and basic reference sources.
  • Knowledge of library data retrieval techniques; understanding of a classification system, subject headings, and library filing rules.
  • Familiarity with automated cataloging systems and records; working knowledge of modern office practices and equipment (including PCs).
  • Knowledge of common office productivity and library software; ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff; basic arithmetic for handling cash and circulation data; basic English writing skills for documenting procedures.

Abilities

  • Perform duties in an open environment with interruptions and under general supervision.
  • Follow detailed procedures for cataloging and filing; learn and understand College library operations, goals, and procedures.
  • Maintain a circulation area that supports research and studying; apply and explain library rules and policies.
  • Deal courteously with patrons, conduct tours, and train others in electronic media use.
  • Operate PCs, peripherals, copiers, scanners, and AV equipment; manage library information in databases via data entry screens.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends; may require work at multiple College locations.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, reach, and twist; adequate visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to use a computer keyboard; ambulatory ability to move carts and reach for lightweight items.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly for conversations in person and over the phone.

Working Conditions

  • Indoor work with safety considerations from physical labor and handling of medium-weight materials.

Requirements

The position requires a High School diploma and one year of experience in a library or instructional setting. Additional higher education will substitute for experience.

Licenses and Certifications

May require a valid driver’s license.
