Job Summary

The Music Director/Accompanist leads all aspects of vocal music for the school's musical theater production, including teaching, rehearsing, and coaching student performers. This role collaborates closely with the Director of Theater to integrate music with dramatic and choreographic elements, often using pre-recorded backing tracks. The Music Director fosters a positive learning environment while ensuring the cast develops strong vocal technique and confidence for performances.

Responsibilities

  • Teach & Coach Vocals: Lead rehearsals for solos, ensembles, and group numbers; provide instruction on technique, expression, and healthy vocal production.
  • Plan & Lead Warm-Ups: Develop appropriate routines to prepare the cast vocally.
  • Adapt Music: Adjust vocal parts or keys as needed to suit student abilities.
  • Collaborate: Work closely with the Theater Director and Choreographer to align music with staging and choreography.
  • Attend: All technical and dress rehearsals and performances, lead warm-ups, and address musical needs in real-time.
  • Rehearse: Learn, manage, and rehearse with pre-recorded tracks; coordinate playback cues with the Stage Manager/Sound team; arrange edits or transpositions when necessary.
  • Support: Foster a supportive and disciplined rehearsal atmosphere focused on learning, growth, and collaboration.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced piano skills and technical proficiency on the piano or keyboard, with exceptional sight-reading ability
  • Ability to accompany young singers by adapting and transposing music to suit their voices
  • Exceptional sight-reading ability to perform music with minimal rehearsal
  • Professionalism and reliability in rehearsals and performances
  • Experience with musical theater repertoire, including understanding song styles and rhythms
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to working with students of varied musical ability
  • Experience as a vocal instructor, providing targeted coaching on vocal techniques, interpretation, and musicality
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate classroom technologies to enhance teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and to serving a diverse, global community
