Overview

California State University, Fresno invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Art in Animation. The position is Tenure Track and will begin Fall 2026 (August 2026). The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Animation curriculum, advise students, and supervise student research/creative activities. Faculty typically teach 12 WTUs per semester, with possible time-course reductions to support scholarly/creative work. The current faculty contract provides for a course release each semester for the first two years. The candidate will conduct independent research/creative activities, serve on school/college/university committees, engage in community service, and participate in School of Art, Design & Art History events. Specific assignments are dependent on the school’s needs and the background of the individual.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the Animation curriculum at all levels of 2D Animation.
  • Advise students and supervise student research/creative activities.
  • Engage in independent research/creative activities and contribute to scholarly/creative output.
  • Serve on school, college, and university committees; participate in community service; attend School events.
  • Contribute to program development based on the school’s needs and candidate’s background.

Qualifications

  • Required Education: An MFA or an equivalent terminal degree in Art, Animation, or related field with an emphasis/specialization in Animation OR
  • Alternative: MA in Art, Animation, or related field with an emphasis/specialization in Animation and five years of professional experience in an animation-related field. Applicants nearing completion of the MFA may be considered, but the degree must be completed by August 1, 2026.
  • Evidence of ability to teach all levels of 2D Animation; knowledge of traditional and contemporary 2D animation processes, techniques, and approaches.
  • Proficiency with industry software (e.g., Adobe Animate, Adobe After Effects, Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, and related tools).
  • Active exhibition and/or production record; substantial scholarship/creative/professional activities; strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and student success.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and students and to engage diverse communities in the San Joaquin Valley region.
  • Minimum of one year of university/college-level teaching experience (teaching assistantships considered).

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of both fine art and industry animation processes.
  • Experience in a variety of animation processes and time-based media (e.g., video art, multimedia installation, interactivity).
