FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The English Department of Hunter College, City University of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with specialization in any area of medieval literature and culture, broadly defined (c. 600-1500), including but not limited to Old English, Old Norse, Middle English, history of the English language, manuscript studies, digital humanities, medieval drama, Arthurian romance, and the literature of medieval Ireland, Scotland, or Wales, beginning in Fall 2026. Applications from scholars whose research features an interdisciplinary and/or global approach to the study of the medieval period are especially encouraged to apply. We welcome candidates whose scholarship and teaching convey the vitality and complexity of this time and its literature to our students.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, pursue original scholarly research in their field, and participate in the administrative life of the department and the college. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field by the date of appointment.

Hunter College is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY). Founded in 1870, it is also one of the oldest public colleges in the country. Hunter College’s English Department offers undergraduate and graduate courses in British, American, postcolonial and global literatures; literary theory and criticism; rhetoric, composition and linguistics; and creative writing. Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience within the range: Assistant Professor: $79,598 - $109,025. CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development. CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will increase by approximately 9.54% with an additional increase of 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
