Overview
Position Description: Serco is seeking Experienced Mechanical Assemblers to support a high-profile US Navy project in Newport News, VA. The role supports C5ISR system installations on U.S. Naval Ships and military installations. You will work as part of a team or independently to deliver high-technology assemblies onboard ships and at military sites.
Safety is a critical focus and you will be involved in safety processes and procedures to protect personnel and operations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise a small team or work independently.
- Follow blueprints, guidelines, and diagrams to fabricate and assemble various electromechanical and electronic assemblies.
- Work onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in environments with drafts, noise, and temperature variations, with attention to safety to prevent injury.
- Demonstrate the ability to work with blueprints, assembly drawings, and sketches to complete a wide variety of assembly and subassembly tasks.
- Read and apply standard concepts, practices, and procedures within this field.
- Operate in accordance with safety requirements and Serco’s “Zero Harm” initiative.
- Read drawings at apprentice level and perform tasks such as drilling holes, cutting metal, shooting studs, and using a torque wrench with minimal supervision.
- Assist with HAZMAT control and safety, maintain HAZMAT locker and safety operations.
- Bolt/unbolt cableways, deck plates, and equipment; position, join, align, wrap, and seal pipe and conduit sections; and operate light machinery/equipment.
- Carry equipment, clean spaces, remove lagging, and paint as needed.
- Possess or obtain certifications such as Firewatch / Cable Installer and respirator qualification; wear proper PPE throughout work shifts.
- Willing to work more than 40 hours per week and travel up to 10% to various work sites.
- Work in Newport News, VA, and be able to access NAVSTA & DBIDS shipyards as required.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- The ability to access shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation, and pass a drug screening.
- The ability to obtain an OSHA certification.
- Shipyard experience.
- Approximately 8 years of experience in areas including: building simple connectors; maintaining HAZMAT safety; qualifying as CP with QA and contractual requirements; reading drawings (apprentice level); drilling, cutting, and assembling components; HAZMAT control; bolting/unbolting cableways and equipment; operating light machinery; pipe/conduit assembly; firewatch/cable installer certifications; carrying and moving equipment; and related tasks.
- Ability to follow directions from senior employees; use power tools for large-scale and intricate assemblies.
- Willing to be respirator-qualified and use proper PPE.
- Able to work in high-heat spaces, climb stairs/ladders in shipyards, and perform layout of cable runs under decking; lift up to 50 pounds and frequently carry/push/pull up to 40 pounds during a shift.
- Active DoD Secret Clearance preferred.
Additional Information
Travel up to 10% to various work sites may be required. Work location is Newport News, VA.
