The Senior RF Attenuation Engineer designs, installs, tests, and optimizes Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) and electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI) shielded environments in accordance with federal government standards. This role involves developing and leading teams to develop fixed and mobile SCIFs and RF shielding solutions, providing technical guidance to project and construction managers on RF attenuation methods, and preparing construction documents, test plans, and work instructions for field implementation. The role also supports R&D efforts related to RF attenuation technologies and contributes to bids and proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Design, lead, and develop RF shielded enclosures, including welded, panelized, and architecturally integrated solutions for fixed and mobile applications.
  • Integrate EMI/RFI components (power line filters, waveguides, shielded doors) into construction and manufacturing designs; supervise and improve integrations by other engineers.
  • Review A&E drawings for EMI/RFI shielding requirements; identify deficiencies and recommend corrections; supervise others in these tasks.
  • Prepare detailed construction documents, architectural details, work instructions, and manufacturing specifications; inspect and correct work of others.
  • Support the installation of RF shielding systems (RF foil applications, modular panels, specialty assemblies) ensuring adherence to plans and performance standards.
  • Perform on-site and factory RF measurements and testing to validate shielding effectiveness and system performance; oversee others in these tasks.
  • Troubleshoot shielding performance issues (signal leakage, grounding problems, EMI/RFI interference) in built environments.
  • Optimize shielded systems for performance, material efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of construction or manufacturing.
  • Specify and manage test equipment for RF validation (calibration, certification, inventory tracking).
  • Provide technical guidance to construction teams, manufacturing personnel, and project managers throughout RF shielding projects.
  • Train installers and technicians in shielded enclosure construction and testing procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy and clarity in customer-facing documentation, drawings, and specifications related to shielding solutions.

Qualifications & Skills

  • In-depth understanding of RF principles and EMI/RFI shielding.
  • Experience performing EMI/RFI shielding effectiveness tests per standards: ICD 705; IEEE 299; MIL-STD-188-125-1; NSA 94-106; NSA 73-2A; MIL-HDBK-1195.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, construction specifications, and other facilities documents; make informed decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to convey technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field; 10+ years of related experience (or equivalent).

Other Requirements

  • Supervisory responsibility for direct reports.
  • Travel within CONUS and OCONUS as necessary.
  • Standard office, workshop, production facility, and field environments; use of PPE as required.

Work Details

  • Position Type / Hours: Full-time salaried exempt; 40 hours/week; travel and flexible hours as needed.
  • Physical Demands: Regular twisting, bending, lifting up to 75 lbs as needed.
  • Security & Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal government security clearance; U.S. work authorization; ability to meet deployment requirements; background check and drug test as required; valid driver’s license.
