Role

Octus, a rapidly growing tech-powered financial news and data company and leader in leveraged finance and distressed debt news and analysis, is seeking a Municipals Reporter to join our team to cover topical high yield and distressed municipal credits, related litigations and market trends for our subscribers who count on us for sophisticated, up-to-date, accurate information.

In this role, the reporter will be responsible for in-depth coverage of the municipal bond market, focusing on financial and governmental disclosures and developments most relevant to high yield and distressed investors and advisors. The reporter will also cultivate and draw on sources and collaborate with legal and financial analysts to provide insight on changes in the regulatory and legal environment and their potential impact on municipal credits under coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary market coverage through pricing stories, deal previews and weekly reviews across high yield municipal sectors, including healthcare, transportation, project finance and state and local governments
  • Monitor secondary market developments for key credits and distressed sectors (e.g. senior living, workforce housing)
  • Develop and maintain contacts across investment banks, buyside, sellside, financial advisory and restructuring firms
  • Pitch and produce trend stories tied to macro themes (e.g. Federal Reserve’s monetary policy, distress in higher education, state bond measures)
  • Collect pricing data from sources and coordinate accurate data entry into databases
  • Formulate and host podcasts/webinars with municipal market experts
  • Attend local and national conferences and other industry events to build sources

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience covering credit markets and a willingness to explore the intricacies of the municipal bond market
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to review and interpret financial disclosures and offering statements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail, with an ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Familiarity with public finance, bankruptcy, and/or restructuring is preferred
  • Experience with data collection and/or data visualization is a plus
  • The candidate must be collaborative and enjoy working in a multicultural team environment

Compensation and Equal Opportunity

At Octus, compensation may vary within and across roles and locations. The salary range estimate for this position is $85,000 - $90,000. The actual compensation will be at Octus’ sole discretion and will be determined by relevant factors. This position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
