What You Will Do:
National Louis University's Undergraduate College is seeking a Reading and Writing Specialist to join our team at the Chicago Loop campus (122 S Michigan) & Wheeling campuses to provide tutoring in academic reading and writing. This is a part-time position of approximately 16-20 hours per week, primarily during daytime classes (9am-4pm).

Essential Responsibilities
- Demonstrate excellence in tutoring: collaborate with faculty to develop an effective learning experience for students with inclusive practices and equitable outcomes; provide tutoring and/or supplemental instruction in blended or remote, synchronous settings; empower students to develop competency by leveraging diverse strengths; utilize technology-based teaching platforms to aid competency development; communicate effectively considering social, cultural, and power dynamics in communication.
- Demonstrate, maintain, and strengthen content expertise: maintain current knowledge in tutoring area; possess appropriate subject-area expertise; stay updated in the field.
- Promote student success with a proactive, high-expectations, high-support approach: show passion for postsecondary success for diverse learners; provide flexible delivery and schedule to support students; identify gaps and generate creative resolutions promoting equity and inclusivity.
- Engage in data-driven instruction and planning: track student data weekly; engage in regular data-driven planning meetings with faculty and coaches; participate in content-area team meetings to review curriculum and plan revisions; contribute to continuous improvement of tutoring efforts; document and share suggestions for program improvement with supervisor.
- Commit to continuous improvement of self and colleagues: attend trainings; engage in self-reflection and learning to foster anti-racism and anti-oppression; participate in workshops and meetings.
Qualifications
- Excellent tutoring and classroom support skills, especially in academic reading and writing.
- Ability to connect course content to real-world relevance and show immediate applicability of transfer skills.
- Ability to differentiate tutoring based on student needs.
- Willingness to use data to inform tutoring and student support.
- Effective collaboration skills to work in diverse teams for student success and equity.
- Technology-proficient; able to learn and use new tools quickly.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Passionate about working with a diverse student body.
- Agile, adaptable, and creative in pedagogy and student support.
- Prepared yet flexible; empathetic yet structured.
- Willing to support students in multiple modalities and grow pedagogically.
- Experience and/or Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field required; TESOL/ESL/ELL credentials strongly preferred; prior teaching or tutoring experience preferred; experience with digital teaching tools and online/synchronous/remote formats preferred; experience with diverse and multilingual students preferred; Spanish-English bilingual a plus.

Compensation and Benefits
NLU part-time staff are offered a range of benefits including health, retirement, and paid time off. The salary range for this position is $21.25 to $29.74 per hour (typical 10-20 hour workweek). Offers consider budget, knowledge/skills, experience, market factors, tenure, and internal equity.
