Hours/Work Schedule: College Business Hours are 8:30am - 4:30pm. This position will occasionally be required to work hours outside of typical business hours for College events.
Working Conditions: This position typically works in an indoor office environment; occasional periods of outdoor exposure may occur at College events. Flexibility in scheduling, including occasional evenings and weekends, and travel to other campuses, educational sites, off campus meetings, and training workshops and seminars may be required. This position operates in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment requiring adaptability and ongoing learning
Physical Duties: Most of the job is sedentary. Occasional periods of light work may be required to assist with event set up, etc.Other physical requirements include:• Oral and written communication, the ability to receive, understand and communicate verbal and written instruction and communicate in the English language• Visual acuity appropriate for a normal clerical-type position• Hearing• Mental Acuity• Fingering• Grasping• Speaking• Talking• Repetitive Motion • Handling

Basic Statement of Responsibilities

The Content and Communications Specialist is responsible for a wide range of communications and content development efforts that support Allegany College of Maryland's mission and strategic goals. Key duties include writing and publishing news stories, serving as editor and feature writer for the ACCESS ACM magazine, managing media relations, and creating content for both internal and external audiences.
Essential Functions

  1. Writes and edits a variety of different content types to support communications and marketing efforts, including, but not limited to:
    • News stories and press releases
    • ACCESS ACM magazine
    • Internal and external newsletters
    • CRM-based communications
    • Advertisements, brochures, and special event publications
    • Website and CRM
  2. Support college-wide communication initiatives by:
    • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to tell ACM's story
    • Developing strategies to increase engagement across media channels
    • Creating and managing content for CRM platforms and communication systems
  3. Serve as a liaison to the media by:
    • Responding to media inquiries
    • Building and maintaining relationships with journalists
    • Pitching stories aligned with the College's strategic goals
    • Monitoring news and updating online archives
  4. Assist with executive and college-wide communications including:
    • Email messages, speeches, presentations, and op-eds
    • Crisis or emergency communications as part of the Emergency Communications Team
  5. Stay informed about trends in public relations and higher education to inform best practices
  6. Perform other duties as assigned
Education, Experience, and Specialized Skills

Required:
  1. Bachelor's degree (journalism, English, public relations, or communications preferred)
  2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in journalism, publication writing, feature writing/editing, or related fields
Skills and Qualifications:
  1. Exceptional writing and storytelling ability with a talent for translating complex topics into engaging, accessible content
  2. Excellent oral communication skills
  3. Strong planning, organizational, and deadline-management skills
  4. Proven ability to independently research and develop stories
  5. Familiarity with CRM and digital communications tools (e.g., HubSpot, EAB CRM)
  6. Experience with basic digital tools and technology platforms used in marketing and communication and ability to learn new platforms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Strong understanding of college programs and services
  2. Knowledge of media operations and journalistic standards
  3. Ability to present content clearly and effectively to diverse audiences
  4. Excellent editing, proofreading, and research skills
  5. Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
  6. Basic math and analytical skills
