Position Summary
The Marketing Specialist at the Kemper Art Museum in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at WashU implements marketing and advertising strategies that help build the Museum's audiences and increase the institution's visibility. The position finds creative ways on campus, regionally, nationally, and internationally to promote the Museum's mission and collection, as well as all aspects of its public-facing activities. The Specialist uses their knowledge of marketing analytics and industry trends to further the Museum's reach and engagement through a variety of channels and campaigns (both print and digital) that demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the Museum, its mission and collection, and its seasonal exhibitions and programs. The position coordinates with the Sam Fox School's Communications Office and the university's offices of Advancement and Marketing & Communications to align marketing strategies and to maximize the effectiveness of these efforts. In support of the goal of raising the profile of the Museum, the Specialist also oversees the membership program in conjunction with University Advancement. As part of these duties, the position supervises the part-time Membership Coordinator. It reports to the Head of Museum Publications.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Advertising Project Management 30%
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of advertising efforts for the Museum, from campaign conception to completion.
  • Identify and develop strategic marketing opportunities, in close collaboration with Museum leadership and Curatorial and Education teams.
  • Coordinate optimal media placements/rates and contract with a variety of external service providers, including graphic designers, printers, and advertising and media outlets. Establish and ensure adherence to budgets and schedules.
  • In coordination with Communications Specialist and project stakeholders, ensure that all advertisement communications, including promotional copy, graphics, and digital communications, are working together in concert.
  • Maintain digital archive of all advertising and press for the
    Museum and seasonal exhibitions.
Audience and Brand Development 30%
  • Develop creative strategies for reaching target audiences to market both specific programs and the Museum in general.
  • Research market and visitor analytics to help evaluate the effectiveness of marketing and communications strategies.
  • Regularly assess the effectiveness of current marketing strategies and meet biannually with Head of Publications and Museum Director to discuss outcomes and realign on institutional priorities.
Membership Program 15%
  • Supervise the part-time Membership Coordinator and oversee the management of the Museum membership program in coordination with University Advancement.
  • Organize monthly communications check-ins with the Events, Curatorial, Education, and Advancement teams for information sharing, coordinating upcoming events, and aligning on priorities.
  • With the Membership Coordinator and Advancement, develop and research creative strategies for engaging current members and growing the program into the future.
Marketing Strategy Liaison 15%
  • Meet regularly with the Sam Fox School Office of Communications office to coordinate communications, cross-marketing, and messaging for greater impact for both the Museum and the School.
  • Work with the University Marketing & Communications office to raise public awareness of the Museum and its programs locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Liaise with other University communications staff to raise awareness of the Museum across campus and meet shared marketing goals.
On-Campus Promotion 10%
  • Develop posters, flyers, digital signage, and other marketing materials to be used across the WashU campus
  • Oversee a student graphic designer in the development of materials, ensuring they meet brand guidelines and that materials are delivered and distributed within deadline
  • Represent the Museum at on-campus events, such as student opportunities fairs, as appropriate.

  • Ability to convey the Museum's identity to its various constituents.
  • Experience using social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn) for business purposes and email services such as Constant Contact and Emma.
  • Proficiency or ability to become proficient with web analytics tools and reporting.
  • Proficiency with SEO/SEM.

Salary Range
$49,700.00 - $82,100.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
