Overview

Staff Audio Video Engineer – Uber

About The Role. As the A/V Engineering Technical Lead Manager at Uber, you will be a technical leader and strategic contributor within the Digital Experience organization. You will lead a small engineering team to implement A/V solutions that power collaboration, communication, and innovation across Uber's global footprint. You will define and drive technical direction across teams, set standards in engineering excellence, and lead high-impact initiatives that align with Uber's broader technology strategy. Your scope will include developing scalable A/V infrastructures, building and improving automation frameworks, owning systems reliability, and leading architectural transformations. You will mentor, review designs and scripts, and advocate for quality, performance, and reliability at scale. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to influence, align, and deliver across diverse functions and geographies.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and lead the implementation of robust A/V systems and control logic for conference rooms, boardrooms, and event spaces across Uber's global offices.
  • Write and maintain high-quality, scalable, and reliable A/V configuration scripts (e.g., Crestron, Q-SYS, Extron) to solve technically complex and business-critical problems.
  • Lead engineering efforts to define and enforce best practices in configuration testing, telemetry, alerting, and incident response across A/V platforms.
  • Serve as an escalation point during major incidents, drive root cause analysis, and lead adoption of best practices to reduce operational risk across the A/V environment.
  • Influence engineering direction by leading design and configuration reviews, mentoring engineers, and improving A/V lifecycle tooling and documentation.
  • Own and evolve Uber's A/V architecture strategy, identifying opportunities to modularize and standardize systems across regions, offices, and use cases.
  • Define and track KPIs such as A/V system uptime, latency, fault tolerance, and user experience metrics to inform roadmap and design decisions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Workplace, Network Engineering, IT, and external vendors to ensure alignment, prioritization, and successful delivery of A/V projects.
  • Identify and resolve architectural gaps, tech debt, or scaling issues while contributing improvements upstream to open-source or A/V partner SDKs.
  • Inspire engineering culture through leadership in hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and fostering technical excellence across the A/V Engineering team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, A/V Technology, or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience engineering A/V systems with emphasis on automation, observability, and architectural design in large-scale environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in control systems and A/V scripting (e.g., Crestron SIMPL/HTML5, Q-SYS Lua, Python, JS, Zoom APIs).
  • Deep expertise in systems integration, video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Teams), signal flow, audio DSP, A/V-over-IP, and networked media.
  • Proven ability to lead multi-phase, multi-team engineering projects from conception through production.
  • Experience designing and implementing fault-tolerant, observable systems and defining appropriate SLAs and SLOs.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills with experience influencing across engineering, product, operations, and vendor teams.
  • Proven track record of mentorship, technical leadership, and raising the engineering bar across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry certifications (e.g., CTS-D, Crestron Master Programmer, Q-SYS Level 3, Dante Certification).
  • Experience with cloud-based A/V infrastructure management, including remote monitoring platforms (e.g., Logitech Sync, Zoom Device Management, XiO Cloud).
  • Background in writing technical documentation and training content for internal engineers and end-users.
  • Familiarity with A/V metrics reporting pipelines and BI tools for usage insights.
  • Experience upstreaming improvements to partner SDKs or A/V control systems.
  • Ability to balance near-term deliverables with long-term architecture and platform strategy.
  • Demonstrated success leading through influence and creating alignment in ambiguous or fast-paced environments.
