Library Media Clerk
The Library Media Clerk’s position is to provide a well-organized, smooth functioning library environment in which students and staff can take full advantage of the materials available. This position is for Madison Elementary, serving students in Kindergarten through Second grade.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Has high school diploma or equivalent.
- Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtained an associate's or higher degree; or
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment the knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics or the instruction in readiness for these subjects.
- Has a basic understanding of library classification and cataloging procedures.
- Knowledge and/or experience in the operation and use of general office equipment, such as a typewriter, fax and computer required.
- Ability to organize materials and maintain organized, orderly areas and files.
- Previous work experience in a school library media center and/or public library for one year or more.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains a circulation system for checking materials in and out, which may include library books, textbooks, Chromebooks or other devices, and various supplemental materials, monitoring overdue materials and keeping circulation records.
- Maintains a Dewey classification cataloging, shelving and filing system.
- Performs basic classifying and cataloging procedures.
- Receives and processes materials for circulation.
- Assists a librarian in selecting and acquiring library media materials.
- Maintains an attractive, organized and accessible library media center.
- Supervises classes or groups of students who are scheduled into the library. Provides a variety of library experiences for students. Maintains order.
- Monitors and supervises students in follow up activities based upon lessons taught by a librarian.
- Assists staff and students in utilization of the library media center’s resources.
- Trains and supervises student assistants and adult helpers as needed.
- Performs basic upkeep and bindery work on materials.
- Clerk will work with IT department to assess charges for damaged Chromebooks.
- Assumes responsibility for inventorying the library media center’s collection on an annual basis.
- Participates in other building duties that are routinely assigned to Educational Assistants as requested by the principal.
- Participates in District meetings for media personnel.
- Develops and implements multi-media learning kits.
- Supporting the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) program in various ways which may include acquiring books, reading books, creating practice materials, coaching students, and helping organize and host school battles or providing support for teams traveling to OBOB competitions.
- Obtains further training, when needed, through District in-service and/or college course work.
- Uses discretion in conversation with people in and out of school and maintains confidentiality.
- Interacts with children and adults, effectively.
- Follows through on routine tasks after interruption.
- Supervises groups of students.
- Trains, organizes and monitors student and adult workers.
- Maintains regular attendance in order to preserve continuity.
- Performs other duties as assigned by teacher, principal and/or supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequency Key: None (N); Occasional - up to 25% of shift (O); Intermittently – up to 50% of shift (I); Frequently – up to 75% of shift (F).
Duties are performed indoors in office/library environment. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
