The City of Newport Beach is seeking a highly motivated and detail-orientated individual to join the team as a Library Assistant for the Library Services Department. Currently, there is one part-time vacancy at the Balboa Branch with a focus on Children's Services. Customer service experience is highly desirable for this role.
SELECTION COMPONENTS:
- Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with a first review date of Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. or at 150 applications - whichever comes first. Applicants that apply after the first review are not guaranteed to be considered for this recruitment. In order for the application package to be considered complete, candidates are required to attach a resume to their online application.
- Online Exam: The most qualified applicants will be invited to take an online exam. This exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 20, 2025.
- Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 29, 2025. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur in the Central Library, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Mariners branches.
Career Path: This is the entry-to-journey level class in the para-professional library series. The series includes part-time Library Assistant and part-time Librarian I.
Schedule: This position works a flexible schedule of up to 19 hours per week including days, nights and weekends based on the needs of the Library.

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: No experience is required. Library experience preferred.
Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
