Springer Nature is one of the leading publishers of research in the world. We publish the largest number of journals and books and are a pioneer in open research. Through our leading brands, trusted for more than 180 years, we provide technology-enabled products, platforms and services that help researchers to uncover new ideas and share their discoveries, health professionals to stay at the forefront of medical science, and educators to advance learning.

About the Brand

Scientific American, the oldest continuously published magazine in the U.S., reaches millions of people each month through its print magazine, app, social media and on ScientificAmerican.com. We publish expert-written opinions and feature stories; news and feature articles by leading journalists; and award-winning graphics, art and multimedia.

About the Role

Scientific American seeks a general science news reporter who can immediately jump on the news of the day - whether it's a dinosaur discovery, a natural disaster or disease outbreak, or a cultural trend that could use a science explainer. The optimal candidate will have a keen eye for what makes a compelling science news story and enthusiasm for all fields of science.

Their writing should be fast, smart and always accurate; they should love the excitement of covering live news as it breaks; and must be able to write multiple stories a day, sometimes posting a paragraph at a time so they can be the first to publish. This is a great opportunity for early-career reporters looking to develop their skills and work towards getting their own beat.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Monitor news feeds and social media for science, health and tech news
  • Quickly and accurately cover breaking news across a variety of subjects
  • Work under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment
  • Write compelling copy that engages readers and meet SEO requirements
  • Conduct research and interviews to confirm facts and add context
  • Develop and maintain relationships with sources and experts

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • 1-3 years of experience as a science, health or tech reporter at a news organization, or a master's degree in journalism with a concentration in science or technology reporting
  • An ability to write fast and clean copy, and produce multiple bylines a day on tight deadlines
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to find breaking stories before they are everywhere
  • A hunger to deliver straight-up news clearly, concisely, and honestly
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional digital journalism skills and the ability to work collaboratively across the platform

Desirable

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, or a master's in journalism
  • Knowledge of AP style and other editorial practices
  • Experience using data and SEO to inform decision-making
  • A knowledge of and enthusiasm for all kinds of science
