Job Description

We are looking for a bright, proactive and ambitious Associate Reporter to be a part of the NBC News Social Newsgathering Team. This candidate will be tasked with finding and verifying visual content and information online to support storytelling across all NBC News platforms.

The ideal candidate should have a passion for news and knowledge of social media platforms, as well as interviewing and reporting skills. The candidate should be able to work in a deadline-driven environment, take direction well, understand domestic and foreign news, and excel at discovering and critically examining information, photos and videos across social and digital platforms.

Job Duties:

  • Monitor social media platforms for breaking, feature and trending news stories
  • Interview eyewitnesses for breaking news stories
  • Find, verify and report on user-generated content (UGC)
  • Analyze visual content for signs of inauthenticity or manipulation
  • Publish daily team digest reports for internal distribution throughout NBC News
  • Collaborate with NBC News digital, TV and streaming units on newsgathering, social media and storytelling projects

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least one year working in a role that includes the use of social media at either a news operation or agency with a focus on news and storytelling
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Must be willing to regularly work evenings/late hours and weekends
  • Must be willing to work in Los Angeles on a hybrid schedule, coming into the office at least three days a week

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to use social media to discover stories
  • Experience verifying visual material and distinguishing the authentic from the fake
  • Demonstrated desire to work in a creative, demanding environment
  • Native curiosity on a variety of topics, and desire to look far and wide for good stories
  • Experience covering breaking news in deadline-driven environments
  • Strong communication skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to write content that is ready for publishing
  • Foreign language skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Salary range: $65,000 - $85,000
