Job Description: In collaboration with partners throughout Harvard Law School (HLS) and across Harvard University, the HLS Communications Office shares the excellence of Harvard Law School’s teaching, scholarship, leadership, service, and impact by producing, hosting, and distributing high-quality content that vividly illustrates for both internal and external audiences the story of HLS and its faculty, students, and alumni. The Communications Office is seeking a visionary storyteller to oversee and chart the future of its flagship publication, the Harvard Law Bulletin.

As Harvard Law School’s alumni magazine, the Bulletin is a trusted source of news for and about the Harvard Law School (HLS) community. Serving nearly 40,000 alumni worldwide, as well as current students, faculty, and staff, the magazine currently publishes in print two times a year, in addition to distributing content via an email newsletter and social media.

The Bulletin’s editor is an innovative, creative thinker with expertise in managing all facets of producing a high-quality, accessible print and online publication to reach audiences where they are, and where they are likely to be in the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold high standards of reporting, writing, and editing for the Harvard Law Bulletin.
  • Be responsible for generating strategic content and production planning.
  • Develop the publication’s print and digital content with compelling written and multimedia stories and engaging design.
  • Research and write feature stories and other articles.
  • Manage the publication’s editorial and creative freelancers, including hiring and supervision.
  • Oversee all assignments for print and online publication.
  • Manage class notes submissions and editing letters to the editor for publication.
  • Work with law school multimedia staff to develop and expand the publication’s digital presence.
  • Collaborate with law school communications on editorial policies and budgetary matters.
  • Participate in regular editorial and other meetings within the department and with various law school divisions.
  • Establish editorial time and associated costs; sets and tracks schedules and enforce deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience of progressive editing management

Additional Qualifications And Skills:

  • Master’s degree a plus
  • Demonstrated writing, editing, and storytelling skills, including expert knowledge of Associated Press standards.
  • Expertise in design, production, and printing procedures and standards, including working with print and other vendors, managing vendor contracts, and overseeing a production budget.
  • Experience with digital and social media engagement, including engagement analytics, photo editing, design and composition.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, law and legal education and/or higher education, preferably a research university; familiarity with Harvard University is a strong plus.
