WRAL News, a leader in award-winning journalism, is seeking a dynamic Reporter/Multimedia Journalist who excels at breaking news coverage, thrives during live reports, and is an exceptional storyteller. This role is vital for gathering and delivering news as it happens for all WRAL digital and television platforms. This position requires a competitive journalist who maintains solid news judgment and a strong sense of live visual storytelling. The right candidate will work with staff photographers to create engaging coverage but must be comfortable working alone as an MMJ.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Breaking News Coverage: Serve as the first responder to new scenes, monitor scanners, source tips, social media and assignment desk communications.
  • Live Reporting: Deliver engaging live shots on all WRAL platforms.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and clarity under deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrate strong photography and editing skills for TV and digital platforms, including vertical videos.
  • Present confidently during live breaking news reports.
  • Effectively use social media to support reporting.
  • Self-start: cultivate sources, seek new information, and secure on-scene interview opportunities as a regular part of the job.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Include a link to your work example reel in addition to a standard resume.
  • Previous experience in television news is required.
  • Willingness to work all shifts, including overnights and weekends; the successful candidate will be primarily scheduled to work overnights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree
  • Proficiency with Edius and live transmission

Physical Demands

  • Carrying and setting up equipment; camera and gear; transporting equipment; setup and teardown.
  • Frequent movement; walking, standing, climbing, navigating terrain.
  • Extended work hours; long days and odd hours, including early mornings and weekends.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather; mobility to reposition on-site.
  • Driving; long distances and vehicle loading/unloading.
  • Multitasking on the move; using mobile devices for writing and updates.
  • Physical posture concerns related to shooting and editing for extended periods.

Work Conditions

  • MMJs work in newsrooms, outdoor locations, and remote sites.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, weather, and outdoor conditions; adaptability required.
  • On-call nature; willing to report on short notice for breaking news.
  • Frequent travel may be required.
