Responsibilities
- Supervises subordinate personnel and coordinates their assignments to meet department needs.
- Processes orders, overdue accounts, library card applications, requests for library material, new books, additional copies, serials, and other library material.
- Assists patrons in person, by telephone and correspondence regarding library policies and procedures; under supervision, assists with routine questions and locating library materials.
- Searches for library materials; obtains information from bibliographies, files, records, and other sources.
- Conducts preliminary cataloging; makes proper entry of new serials; assigns Cutter numbers; files and maintains records.
- Performs clerical tasks: writes correspondence, types, records money, and handles invoices with vendors/publishers as needed.
- Manages circulation and disposition of library material; assists in opening/closing and maintaining orderly workspaces; participates in inventory and shelf checks.
- Assists in creating and displaying reference materials and resources; may help prepare exhibits or publicity material.
- May troubleshoot and maintain the Library's website, intranet and other electronic media systems; may organize audio, video, images, and graphics; provide technical training to staff as needed.
- Under the supervision of a librarian, may be responsible for day-to-day operations of a reading center.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications (as stated in the announcement):
- An A.A. degree with a major in Library Information Technology AND one year of full-time verifiable experience in technical library work (technical services, circulation, cataloging, or information services) equivalent to the duties of Library Technical Assistant I in SF.
- OR Completion of a Library Information Technology certificate AND two years of full-time verifiable library experience, at least one year in technical library work, equivalent to Library Technical Assistant I.
- OR Three years of full-time verifiable library experience, at least one year in technical library work, equivalent to Library Technical Assistant I.
Special Conditions: Some positions may require bilingual skills; a language proficiency test may be administered. Some positions require lifting up to 50 pounds, and some may require a valid California driver’s license. Some positions may require evening/weekend work and may be located at various Library locations.

Selection Procedures
The selection process includes:
- Application and Preliminary Questionnaire; additional assessments may be required.
- Core Multiple Choice Examination (weight 80%) covering library knowledge, procedures, software, and related areas; and
- Basic Supervisory Exam (weight 20%) covering supervisory practices and customer service.
- Passing scores on both exams are required for eligibility on the list. Some candidates may be scheduled for additional position-specific procedures.
Banked Score: Scores are banked for three years and may be reused for future announcements.
