Job Description
The music therapist will:
- Create individualized treatment plans and goals for patients based on their specific needs.
- Plan, organize, implement, adapt, and evaluate music therapy interventions designed to positively influence patients' psychosocial needs.
- Document patient progress and outcomes in the patient’s EMR.
- Create and implement interdisciplinary co-treatments with other pediatric palliative care providers to support psychosocial needs of patients and families.
- Integrate the most appropriate music therapy approach (i.e. behavioral, developmental, improvisational, neurological, medical) into the patient’s music therapy treatment planning.
- Have a high level of clinical musicianship by playing, adapting, and selecting appropriate musical and non-musical equipment for all music therapy experiences.
- Supervise music therapy students and maintain current clinical music therapy practice through review of current music therapy research.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Provide legacy interventions and bereavement support for patients and families regarding anticipatory grief and at the time of death as appropriate.
- Communicate clinically relevant music therapy information effectively to a variety of professional disciplines in the form of oral, written, in-services, conferences and other community sharing opportunities.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy. Master’s Degree preferred.
Experience: 2 years of music therapy experience working with children required. Experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
Required: Music Therapist – Board Certified (MT-BC)
Knowledge of:
- Music therapy interventions and theory
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the medical conditions and healthcare experiences of specific patient populations
- Clinical operations policies and procedures; documentation and patient record policies and standards
- In-depth knowledge of child development theory and practice
- Therapeutic play activities and materials; teaching techniques; identification of learning needs and provision of patient/family education
- Legal and ethical issues related to patient rights
- Crisis intervention techniques
Skilled at:
- Musical proficiency and plays a variety of instruments
- Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Basic proficiency in utilization of personal computers in networked Windows-based health care environment to access related software applications; locate, open, edit and print files and information utilized by the unit; and use of Internet as research tool

- Maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies and other stresses

- Lead and train staff and/or students in music therapy and practice
- Work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
