Overview

Senior Technical Director, Structural Engineer role at WSP in the U.S. Location: Portland, OR. The following locations will be considered: Vancouver, WA. Be involved in projects with the Pacific Mountain West Structures Team and help lead the structures practice for bridges and other structures in Oregon and coordinating with out-of-state work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the design, implementation, and administration of bridge or other structural engineering project work and program involvement within the organization.
  • Lead the most complex and largest-scale bridge or other structural engineering projects within the engineering discipline; manage budgets, hours and expenses, supervise subcontractors, contract work, and staff to ensure satisfactory performance and profitability.
  • Pursue and develop business for the structures practice in collaboration with highway and civil engineering practices; execute current and potential infrastructure work within the geography, focusing on large projects in the area.
  • Lead technical aspects of contract negotiations, presentations, and meetings.
  • Drive long-term strategy, growth, and pipeline development of Structural Engineering work in the assigned area, covering planning, design, strategic consulting, and program/construction management.
  • Ensure profitable project performance and successful completion within the specified area; drive compliance with Federal, State, and Local engineering/design/construction laws and regulations.
  • Oversee the discipline’s vision and certifications, accreditations, and client value ratings; align with business operations strategy and foster innovation and quality project delivery.
  • Lead engineering discipline meetings and continuing education, providing updates and recommendations to staff to promote innovation and development.
  • Act as liaison to external entities including Federal, State, Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry groups, and government/community entities.
  • Provide senior leadership for proposals, project scopes, pricing, budgets, and performance metrics; lead multi-disciplinary project teams and provide strategic client advice.
  • Develop high-level business contacts and a client base for high-level structural engineering services and cross-sell other WSP capabilities.
  • Collaborate with professionals from various disciplines to deliver future-ready solutions; exercise ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 15+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering, structural/civil and infrastructure design.
  • Oregon Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
  • Advanced proficiency with structural engineering principles, design requirements, and related regulations; experience with permitting and project-related issues.
  • Extensive proficiency with building and infrastructure design; advanced knowledge of structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and their business impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and manage large discipline-related programs and projects.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills; ability to manage staff and interact with employees at all levels.
  • Strategic thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization under pressure.
  • Ability to collaborate with senior management, clients, and staff across hierarchies; adaptable to change and flexible schedules as needed.
  • Advanced knowledge of office software and discipline-specific design tools (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, finite element software, SAP, CSI-Bridge, LARSA, L-Pile, BIM software, Bluebeam Revu) and related technologies.
  • Proven track record of workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering.
  • ODOT and Oregon Local Programs experience; knowledge of the Oregon and Southwest Washington market is highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits

WSP provides a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, retirement savings, paid sick leave, vacation/personal time, parental leave, bereavement, voting, and naturalization-related time off. Salary range: $171,000 – $272,690. WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range based on qualifications and geographic location.
