The New York Times Sunday Magazine is looking for a Copy Editor for a temporary position for between roughly 20 and 30 weeks, with the opportunity for future relief help. You have a detailed eye, curious nature and a collaborative, collegial spirit. You will work with writers, story editors, researchers, designers, photography editors and production members.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Proof-read articles between 1,000 and 10,000 words on a wide array of subjects
  • Copy edit articles not just for spelling and grammar, but also for clarity, factualness and New York Times style and standards
  • Work on multiple articles through several rounds of heavy editing
  • Edit articles with digital and print trajectories, and understand their respective qualities and procedures
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Copy Chief of The New York Times Sunday Magazine

Basic Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of editorial experience, with a mix of digital and print.
  • Familiarity with New York Times and Associated Press style.
  • An ear for copy that sings, and a steady hand for copy that needs a little unraveling

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience at a weekly magazine.
  • Experience with Oak and InCopy K4.
  • Excellent editorial judgment and attention to detail.
  • Experience meeting deadlines, both self-imposed and scheduled.
  • Experience prioritizing and handling multiple projects at various stages of production.
  • A congenial, collaborative approach in making and taking suggestions.
  • The confidence to problem-solve independently and to ask for guidance when needed.
